Reborn
Sculpture by Bambang Adi Pramono
At Hanna Art Space, Jl. Raya Pengosekan, Ubud
Tel: 978216
The Hanna Art Space is holding an exhibition of the work of sculptor Bambang Adi Pramono, an artist who was born in Sidoarjo in June, 1955, and graduated from the Indonesian Art Institute, Yogyakarta in 1976. Pramono lives and works in Bali. The exhibition is entitled ‘Reborn’, as Pramono has not exhibited for some time, preferring to work as a designer, project manager, and consultant. As Pramono has not worked in the fine arts arena for a lengthy period, he feels that his appearance in this exhibition can be seen as a ‘rebirth’ into the world of arts. Pramono regards himself as being ‘Reborn’ in this exhibition. Or, to be more precise, he thinks of the exhibition “as a metamorphosis, like the birth of a beautiful butterfly”. Consequently, for Pramono, this exhibition constitutes a new ‘enlightenment’, from within his artistic processes and artistic point of view.
The ‘Reborn’ exhibition presents sculpture of various sizes, from the small and intimate to the huge and daunting. What is intriguing in the show is that Pramono utilizes both wood and metal as his medium of choice, but gently carves the former and manipulates and heavily transforms the latter. For example, in the wooden piece ‘Dragon’s Penishhh’, Pramono allows the lines and forms within the wood to dictate the final form of the sculpture. However, in metallic pieces, such as ‘The Last Summer’, the works are created from drawings, and, the finished pieces are accurate realizations of his highly detailed sketches, which are also on display. Further, it is interesting to note that many of these metallic pieces also reflect various shapes and forms that occur naturally in nature.
In the hands of this talented sculptor, these wooden or metallic pieces become unique pieces of sculpture. The ‘Reborn’ exhibition re-establishes Bambang Adi Pramono as an important and influential contemporary Indonesian artist.
